Description

Goldwin Smith (1823–1910) was a journalist, author, professor, historian, and translator, born in Reading, England. He was educated at Oxford University, which he attended from 1841 to 1848.

Smith was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History in 1858, a position he held until 1866. In 1868, he was appointed as professor, Cornell University until 1870.

He was a co-founder of many periodicals, including Canadian Monthly and National Review in 1872) and Evening Telegram four years later. In addition, he was the founder, editor, and publisher of Bystander, a controversial political magazine devoted to a diverse range of topics. A self-described liberal, Smith was also an author of many books, many related to his involvement in the Canadian political affairs.

In particular, he championed the secularization of education and freedom of schools from religious interference. His publications include Canada and the Canadian Question (Macmillan Company of Canada Limited, 1891) and Oxford and Her Colleges, Macmillan Company of Canada Limited, 1894), among other titles.

First three portrait plates engraved by John Angel James Wilcox (1835–). Last portrait plate engraved by Frederick T. Stuart (1837–1913).

Includes advertisements on last two unnumbered pages.

Published by William Briggs, the trade division of the Methodist Book and Publishing House. Briggs (1836–1922) served as the Book Steward between 1879 and 1919. In 1920, the publisher was renamed Ryerson Press and was among the most prestigious publishing enterprises in the country.

Description

William Arthur Deacon (1890–1977) was a literary critic and editor. He served as a book review editor for various newspapers and magazines: Manitoba Free Press (1921), Saturday Night (1922–1928), Toronto Mail and Empire (1928–36) and The Globe and Mail (1936–1961). 

Pens and Pirates (Ryerson Press, 1923), Poteen: A Pot-Pourri of Canadian Essays (Graphic Publishers Limited, 1926), and The Four Jameses (Graphic Publishers Limited, 1927) are considered to be his best publications.  

My Vision of Canada is a passionate political treatise on the needs of Canada. 

The book is bound in green paper boards lettered in light green. White paper dust-jacket printed in purple, bright light green and yellow. It is an inscribed presentation copy dedicated to Pelham Edgar (1871–1948), a Victoria College professor, author, editor, founder of the Canadian Writers' Foundation, and proponent of Canadian poetry, literature, and cultural life.  

John Ford Clymer (1907–1989), an American illustrated and painter designed the dust jacket.

Description

Professor Donald Creighton (1902–1979), a Victoria College alumnus, is recognized as a prolific historian of Canada.

His publications include John A. Macdonald, a two-volume biography published by Macmillan Company of Canada between 1952 and 1955, continues to be a milestone in the scholarship on Canadian history.  

The Commercial Empire of the St Lawrence, 1760–1850 (Ryerson Press, 1937) analyzes the role of the river in the development of the Canadian economy, based on the trade of "staples"— fish, fur, timber, wheat, and minerals. 

Domnion of the North recounts the national history of Canada until 1939 and concludes with the country's declaration of war against Germany. Second edition was published in Canada by the Macmillan Company of Canada Limited in 1957 with an additional chapter, "Modern Canada in a Great-Power World."

Description

Charles Vincent Massey (1887–1967) was a politician and diplomat, and governor general.

Born into a prominent Toronto family (founders of the internationally successful Massey Manufacturing Company, specializing in the production of farm equipment), Massey also served as high commissioner to Great Britain in the government of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874–1950) between 1935 and 1946.

On Being Canadian explores Canadian society, culture, history, geography, foreign policy, diplomatic relations with the United States, and the role of Canada in the Commonwealth of Nations. 

Canadian Massey also chaired the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters and Sciences, appointed by Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent in 1949. Canada Council for the Arts (a government entity responsible for promoting Canada's cultural industries), was established as part of the recommendations of the committee.

J.M.S. Careless (1919–2009) was a historian and professor at the University of Toronto. His scholarly contributions included the establishment of a theoretical framework for the study of the development of Canadian cities.

During his retirement, Careless was appointed senior research associate at Victoria College and the Donald Creighton Lecturer at the University of Toronto in 1987.

Published in two volumes by the Macmillan Company of Canada Limited, between 1959 and 1963. Volume one, "The Voice of Upper Canada, 1818–1859," Volume two, "Statesman of Confederation, 1860–1880," Careless received Governor General's Literary Award in 1963 for the book.

His other prominent titles are Canada: A Story of Challenge (Cambridge University Press, 1953), The Union of the Canadas (McClelland and Stewart, 1967), The Rise of Cities (Canadian Historical Association, 1978), Toronto to 1918: An Illustrated History (James Lorimer, 1984) and Frontier to Metropolis (University of Toronto Press, 1989).
